The American dramatic mezzo Jamie Barton was born in Georgia in 1981 and studied voice at Shorter College and Indiana University; early successes included the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2007. Making her professional debut as Annina in La Traviata in 2007, Barton confined herself to comparatively small roles (such as Emilia in Verdi’s Otello, Giovanna in Rigoletto, and Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflote) for several years, during which time she made debuts at Houston opera, the Bavarian State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera.

In 2013 Barton became only the second person in history to win both the Song Prize and Main Prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, singing songs by Brahms, Rachmaninov and Sibelius and arias from Berlioz’s Les Troyens, Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur and Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. Following her Cardiff success, she began to take on true dramatic mezzo roles including Eboli in Don Carlos, Fricka and Waltraute in The Ring Cycle , Jezibaba in Rusalka and Adalgisa in Norma (both of which she performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 2017/18).

Barton’s debut solo recording, All who wander (featuring Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder and songs by Sibelius and Dvořák) was released on Delos in November 2016 and won the 2018 BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award as well as being shortlisted for the Gramophone Awards the previous year.
