Born in Mayen in 1962, German bass Franz-Josef Selig studied in Cologne and began his career in Essen; he is particularly associated with Wagner, where his roles include König Marke, Fasolt, Hunding, Gurnemanz and Daland, making his Bayreuth debut in the latter role in 2012. His repertoire also encompasses Rocco in Fidelio, Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, and Seneca in L’incoronazione di Poppea.
